RoHS: Keeping Toxins Out of Your Electronics

Ever wonder what makes your new phone, laptop, or coffee maker "RoHS Compliant"? That little label signifies an important European regulation designed to protect both human health and the environment: the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive.

The RoHS Directive was born in the European Union (first adopted in 2003, with updates like RoHS 2 and RoHS 3), RoHS restricts the use of specific hazardous materials in the manufacture of various types of Electrical and Electronic Equipment (EEE). Its core mission is simple but vital:

Protect Human Health: Prevent exposure to toxic substances, especially for workers involved in electronics manufacturing and recycling, and for consumers using products daily.

Safeguard the Environment: Reduce the release of dangerous chemicals into landfills, soil, and water when electronic waste (e-waste) is improperly disposed of or recycled.

RoHS sets strict maximum concentration limits for ten key substances within the "homogeneous materials" (the smallest identifiable components) of covered electronics:

Substance name

Limit

Pb

0.1% (1000ppm)

Cd

0.01% (100ppm)

Hg

0.1% (1000ppm)

Cr6+

0.1% (1000ppm)

PBB

0.1% (1000ppm)

PBDE

0.1% (1000ppm)

*(Note: DEHP, BBP, DBP, and DIBP were added in RoHS 3 (EU Directive 2015/863))*

We should care about RoHS because it delivers significant benefits across multiple fronts. First and foremost, it creates healthier homes and workplaces by reducing our exposure to known toxins found in everyday electronic devices. Secondly, it contributes to a cleaner planet by making electronics safer to recycle and less hazardous when they inevitably end up in landfills. Critically, RoHS drives innovation, spurring manufacturers to develop safer alternatives and promoting greener chemistry and design principles. Finally, despite originating as an EU law, RoHS has evolved into a de facto global standard; manufacturers selling worldwide often design to its requirements, extending its health and environmental protections to consumers everywhere.

For manufacturers, complying with RoHS involves a continuous process of due diligence and documentation. They are first required to thoroughly understand the rules, including which specific products and substances fall under the directive's scope. To ensure their products meet the strict substance limits, they must rigorously test components and materials internally or obtain valid Declarations of Conformity from their suppliers. Crucially, manufacturers must maintain detailed technical documentation proving this compliance. Ultimately, to legally place covered products on the EU market, they affix the CE mark to their products, which serves as their formal declaration that the product meets all applicable EU requirements, including RoHS.

At Hangzhou Deheng Smart Electric, we are dedicated to manufacturing safe and environmentally responsible products. We are proud to confirm that our range of smoke alarm detectors complies fully with the stringent requirements of the RoHS Directive. This commitment ensures our products contribute to a safer living environment and a healthier planet.
